The Doctor is both her father and mother - her genes are essentially his, scrambled and female. She was born in war, meant to be soldier, but the Doctor taught her she had a choice. She had just begun to bond with him, and wanted to see new worlds, save civilizations, defeat monsters, and run with him. Instead she stepped in front of a bullet meant for him.
